The old town of Ciutadella, with its cathedral, port and narrow streets, is a short drive away. You will need a car for most errands and trips to the south-coast coves.

In high summer the area is active, with day-trippers arriving at the coves and the town busy in the evenings. In the shoulder months of May, June and September the pace is quieter, and many restaurants and shops in the resort areas close from November to April. The villa's garden and pool give you a private outdoor space regardless of the season.

Getting there

Buses from the airport run to Maó and, in summer, to the resorts, but you would then need a second bus or a taxi from Ciutadella to Cala en Blanes. A hire car is the most practical option.

From Maó port (41.7 km straight line), you can take a taxi or a hire car. From Ciutadella (3.6 km straight line), a short taxi ride or drive brings you to the villa. Ferries from Barcelona arrive at Ciutadella port, which is very close. In winter, flights and ferries are fewer, and some bus lines stop running. Check the island bus operator for current services.

Beaches, sights and food nearby

Ciutadella old town is 3.5 km straight line from the villa. You can drive there in a few minutes for evening walks around the port and the cathedral. The Naveta des Tudons, a prehistoric boat-shaped tomb, is 7.9 km away and is worth a short trip. Cala Turqueta, a white-sand cove on the south coast, is 12.5 km straight line; arrive early in summer as the car park fills quickly.

Menorca's south coast has limestone coves with clear water. Cala Galdana is 15.5 km straight line from the villa. The Camí de Cavalls, the 185-km coastal path, passes near several of these coves. For local food, try Mahón-Menorca cheese, which has a protected designation of origin, or caldereta de llagosta (lobster stew) from the north-coast village of Fornells.

A day from Villa Papaya

Start the morning with breakfast at the villa, then drive 12.5 km to Cala Turqueta. Arrive early to park and spend the morning swimming and sunbathing on the white sand. The cove is surrounded by pine trees and has no facilities, so bring water and snacks from the villa. Walk a short section of the Camí de Cavalls along the cliffs for views of the turquoise water.

In the afternoon, drive 7.9 km to the Naveta des Tudons, the prehistoric tomb just outside Ciutadella. After visiting the site, continue 3.5 km into Ciutadella old town. Walk through the narrow streets to the port, find a spot for a drink or a meal, and watch the sunset over the harbour. Drive back to the villa for a swim in the pool before bed.

Practical tips

Much of Menorca's tourism business closes roughly from November to April, so check with Villa Papaya whether it is open during your dates. July and August are the busiest months, with higher demand for car parking at the coves. The Balearic sustainable tourism tax (the ecotasa) is charged per person per night by the accommodation; the rate depends on the season and the type of accommodation, is reduced in low season and for longer stays, and children under 16 are exempt.
