In the shoulder months of May, June and September the area is more relaxed, and the pool becomes a private alternative to the sea. A car is essential for exploring the island: the villa has free parking. The Camí de Cavalls passes near the coast, and the south-coast coves are within a 10-20 minute drive.

Beaches, sights and food nearby

Ciutadella old town is 3 km straight line from Villa Mafel. Its narrow streets, cathedral and port are worth an evening visit. The Naveta des Tudons, a boat-shaped prehistoric tomb, is 5.6 km away on the road to Ciutadella. Cala Turqueta, a white-sand cove with pine trees, is 8 km straight line; arrive early in summer or take the seasonal bus from Ciutadella. Cala Galdana, a larger sandy bay with facilities, is 11.4 km straight line.

The south coast (Migjorn) has limestone coves such as Cala Macarella and Cala en Porter, all within a 15-20 minute drive. The Camí de Cavalls runs along the coast and can be accessed near Cala Blanca. For island food, look for Mahón-Menorca cheese, sobrasada (a cured sausage) and caldereta de llagosta (lobster stew) in Ciutadella restaurants. The Sant Joan festival in Ciutadella (around 23-24 June) features horses and riders.

A day from Villa Mafel

Start the morning with coffee made in the villa's kitchen, then drive 8 km to Cala Turqueta. Arrive early to find parking and a spot on the white sand. Swim in the clear water and walk the pine-fringed path. By mid-morning, drive back via the Naveta des Tudons (5.6 km from the villa) to see the prehistoric tomb. Return to Villa Mafel for lunch by the pool.

In the afternoon, drive 3 km into Ciutadella. Walk the old town, visit the cathedral and the port. Have a drink at a port-side café. As dusk approaches, the west-facing harbour is good for sunset. Drive back to the villa for a self-cooked dinner. The outdoor pool is lit, so you can swim after dark. The quiet residential area means a restful night.

Practical tips

Much of Menorca's tourism business closes roughly from November to April; check with Villa Mafel whether it is open in winter. July and August are the peak months, with higher demand for hire cars and more traffic at the south-coast coves. The Balearic sustainable tourism tax (ecotasa) is charged per person per night by the accommodation; the rate depends on the season and the type of villa, and children under 16 are exempt.
