For those arriving at Maó, a hire car or a taxi is the most straightforward option. In winter, flights and ferries are fewer, and some bus lines may not run. Beaches, sights and food nearby

Ciutadella old town is 3.1 km straight line from Villa Luz. The old capital has a cathedral, palaces and a narrow port with restaurants. The Naveta des Tudons, a boat-shaped prehistoric tomb, is 7.5 km away. Cala Turqueta, a white-sand cove on the south coast, is 12.1 km away. Cala Galdana, another popular south-coast beach, is 15.2 km away.

Es Mercadal and Monte Toro, the highest point on Menorca at about 358 m, are 24.6 km away. The sanctuary at the top has views of both coasts. The island is known for Mahón-Menorca cheese, which has a protected designation of origin, and for caldereta de llagosta, a lobster stew from Fornells. Guests with a car can reach the Camí de Cavalls, the coastal bridleway, at several access points.

A day from Villa Luz

A day from Villa Luz could start with a short drive into Ciutadella for breakfast at a café near the port. The old town is walkable once you park. After that, drive to Cala Turqueta, about 12 km away. Arrive early in summer to find a parking space. The cove has soft white sand and clear water, with pine trees coming down to the shore. Spend the morning swimming and walking the coastal path.

In the afternoon, visit the Naveta des Tudons, 7.5 km from the apartment. The prehistoric tomb is open to the public and takes about 20 minutes to see. Return to Villa Luz for a rest by the pool. In the evening, drive back to Ciutadella for a walk around the port at sunset. The harbour faces west, so the light is good for a late meal or a drink on a terrace.

Practical tips

Much of Menorca's tourism business closes roughly from November to April. Check with Villa Luz whether it is open in the months you plan to travel. July and August are the peak months, when the south-coast coves fill early and car parks have limits.
