Getting there

Menorca Airport (MAH) is about 13.3 km straight line from Casa Malibu. A taxi from the airport to Son Bou takes about 20 minutes. In summer, a bus runs from the airport to Maó, where you can change for a bus to Son Bou; the service is less frequent from November to April. A hire car gives the most flexibility, especially for reaching coves and inland villages.

Maó port is about 16.4 km straight line from the apartment. Ferries from Barcelona, Palma and Ciutadella arrive there. From the port, a taxi or a hire car is the easiest way to reach Son Bou. Buses from Maó to Son Bou run in the summer months; check the island bus operator for current timetables. In winter, fewer flights and ferries serve Menorca, and some bus lines stop running.

Beaches, sights and food nearby

Son Bou beach is the nearest, about 0.8 km away. It is a long stretch of golden sand with dunes and a wetland behind it. Cala en Porter, a deep cove between high cliffs, is 6.4 km from the apartment. Cala Macarella, a white-sand cove under pines, is 12 km away and is best reached by car or by the summer bus from Son Bou. The south coast coves have car parks that fill early in July and August.

A talayotic village is 2.8 km from Casa Malibu, part of the Talayotic Menorca World Heritage site. Monte Toro, the island's highest point at about 358 m, is 9.7 km away; from the sanctuary at the top you can see both coasts. Es Mercadal, at the foot of Monte Toro, is a village with shops and restaurants. Mahón-Menorca cheese is a local speciality to try.

A day from Casa Malibu

Start the morning at Son Bou beach, a 15-minute walk from Casa Malibu. Swim in the calm water and walk along the dunes. Later, drive 2.8 km to the talayotic village to see the prehistoric talaiots and taules. Return to the apartment for lunch on the terrace. In the afternoon, drive 9.7 km to Monte Toro for the views, then stop in Es Mercadal for a coffee.

In the late afternoon, drive 12 km to Cala Macarella for a swim in a sheltered cove. Return to Casa Malibu for a shower and a meal cooked in the kitchen. The evening can be spent on the balcony or by the outdoor pool. In the shoulder months, the beach and the roads are quieter. In July and August, arrive at Cala Macarella early to find parking.

Practical tips

Much of Menorca's tourism business closes roughly from November to April; check Casa Malibu's opening dates before booking. July and August are the peak months, with the busiest beaches and higher demand for hire cars. The Balearic sustainable tourism tax (the ecotasa) is charged per person per night by the accommodation; the rate depends on the season and the type of accommodation, and is reduced for longer stays and in low season.
