Location: Sant Ferran de ses Roques

Casa Rosella is in the inland area of Sant Ferran de ses Roques, 0.7 km straight line from the village centre. Sant Ferran is a small settlement with a few shops, a bakery and a couple of bars. It is not a beach resort: the nearest coast is Platja de Migjorn, 2.5 km straight line south, and Es Pujols is 2.4 km straight line north-east. The village feels quiet even in high summer, with little passing traffic.

In July and August the island is busy, but Sant Ferran stays calmer than Es Pujols or the Ses Illetes area. In the shoulder months of May, June, September and October, the village is very quiet and many seasonal businesses are closed. A car or bicycle is useful for reaching the beaches, the capital Sant Francesc (2.7 km) and the port at La Savina (5.2 km). Buses run along the main road, but services are reduced outside summer.

Rooms and facilities

The villa is listed with a kitchen or kitchenette, a microwave, an oven, a toaster, a refrigerator and a washing machine. There is air conditioning, a fan, a safe, a desk, an iron and board, and free WiFi. The bathroom has a hairdryer, toiletries, a bathrobe and a bidet. The accommodation includes a terrace, a patio, a solarium and a garden. There is free car parking on site.

The property is described as non-smoking. There is a TV but no mention of a pool or on-site restaurant. Guests arriving late should confirm check-in arrangements with the property, as there is no reception desk. The facilities suit families who want to self-cater and couples who value a quiet outdoor space. Confirm the bed configuration and the exact number of guests the villa can hold when booking.

Getting there

Formentera has no airport. Fly to Ibiza Airport (IBZ), then take a bus or taxi to Ibiza Town port (the airport is about 7 km south-west of Ibiza Town). From the port, ferries cross to La Savina on Formentera: fast ferries take about 30-35 minutes, conventional ferries about an hour. Sailings are frequent in summer and fewer in winter. Check the operators for current timetables.

From La Savina port, Casa Rosella is 5.2 km straight line south-east. A taxi from the port takes about 10 minutes. A hire car collected at the port is the most flexible option. Formentera is flat and small: bikes and the signposted green routes (circuits verds) are a good way to get around. Scooters are also popular. The Consell de Formentera caps the number of visitor vehicles in high season, so check before bringing or hiring a car. Buses run between the main villages.

Beaches, sights and food nearby

The nearest beach is Platja de Migjorn, 2.5 km straight line south, a long open stretch of sand backed by dunes and juniper. Es Pujols, 2.4 km north-east, is the liveliest village with a beach, evening bars and boat houses. Sant Francesc, 2.7 km south-west, is the island's small capital with a fortified 18th-century church, a market and shops. The lagoons of Estany Pudent and Estany des Peix, part of the Ses Salines Natural Park, are 3.7 km north. These are good for birdwatching and calm-water kayaking or paddleboarding. A day from Casa Rosella

Start the morning with breakfast on the terrace at Casa Rosella. Drive or cycle the 2.5 km to Platja de Migjorn for a swim before the wind picks up. The beach is long and uncrowded in the early hours. Bring a picnic or buy supplies in Sant Ferran. After a few hours, head 3.7 km north to the Estany Pudent lagoon to watch birds or walk part of the Ses Salines path.

In the afternoon, visit Sant Francesc, 2.7 km away, and see the fortified church. Browse the shops or have a coffee in the square. Late afternoon, drive to Cap de Barbaria on the south coast for the sunset. Return to Casa Rosella for an evening meal cooked in the kitchen. The village is quiet after dark, so the terrace is a good place to sit out. On a Wednesday or Sunday in season, the craft market at El Pilar de la Mola is worth the drive.

Practical tips

Much of Formentera's tourism business closes roughly from November to April. Check with Casa Rosella for its opening dates. July and August are the peak months, with the highest demand for ferries, car hire and accommodation. The Balearic sustainable tourism tax (the ecotasa) is charged per person per night by the accommodation. The rate depends on the type of accommodation and the season, is reduced in low season and for longer stays, and children under 16 are exempt. Check the current rate on the Govern de les Illes Balears website.
